Red Wing Pottery, third-generation family business, up for sale
RED WING, Minn. – A few weeks ago, Red Wing Pottery owner and manager Scott Gillmer announced he intends to sell the family business by year’s end or cease operations.
Gillmer said he soon received some inquiries about purchasing Red Wing Pottery. After some recent play from Twin Cities media this week, more interested parties have arisen.
“Essentially, the family owns two assets,” Gillmer said. One is the property along Old West Main Street and the other includes the Red Wing Pottery name, the inventory and the operations, he said. Together they make up the Pottery Salesroom.
While Gillmer said ideally one buyer would buy both entities, he will consider selling them separately. He added that he won’t keep the retail doors open through another winter, but he will keep the historic name until a buyer emerges.
In addition to selling merchandise, the salesroom makes salt-glazed pottery.
Red Wing Stoneware Co. products also are sold at the Red Wing Pottery Salesroom. Gillmer said it was important to note Red Wing Stoneware has no part in the sale of Red Wing Pottery.
“We want people to understand Red Wing Stoneware is a separate business,” he said.
Gillmer is the third generation of his family to operate the business.
Red Wing Pottery Sales Inc. currently employs 13 full-time and 27 part-time workers, according to the Red Wing Chamber of Commerce.
