A walk-off homerun by Perham catcher Gabe Pankonin ended the 2013 season for the Detroit Lakes Angels in the Region 14C playoffs Sunday.

Pankonin’s homer capped a five-run bottom of the ninth inning for the Pirates, after the Angels put up four runs in the top half of the frame to take a 9-6 lead.

The Angels committed two crucial errors in the season-killing inning, while Mark Gulseth took the loss in relief.

The bats for both teams were producing, as DL picked up 13 hits and Perham 15.

The Angels rallied in the top of the ninth after trailing 6-5, with RBI hits by Brian Buhr and Chris Gilson, as well as two errors by Perham.

But the Pirates put it away on just two hits – including Pankonin’s home run – along with a walk and hit batter.

Angel shortstop Connor McLeod went 3-6, while pitching in the ninth in relief of starter Trevor Tappe, who went 7.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs.

Buhr went 3-5 with two RBIs, with Ryan Berg and Taylor Fuhs each gaining two hits.

Perham was led by Pankonin, who had an excellent day at the plate by going 5-6 with three RBIs, while Eric Brauch had two hits and three RBIs.

Tyler Doll picked up the win in relief, as Brauch went two innings and starter Brandon Kupfer (New York Mills’ draftee) went six innings.

The Angels fell in the second round, losing to top seeded Bertha 6-4.

The Blazers put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally back from a 4-2 deficit.

Mark Gulseth went 2-5 with two RBIs, while Bertha was led by leadoff hitter Marcus Riewer who went 2-5 and an RBI.

Brock Johnson was tagged with the loss after going seven innings and allowing four earned runs, walking six and striking out three.

Patrick Riewer was the winning pitcher with the complete-game victory, allowing seven hits and striking out a whopping 16.

The playoffs started with a 9-5 win over Carlos Friday, as Derek Zitzow and Gilson combined to hold the home team to six hits.

This time, the Angels had a late-inning rally with six runs in the top of the ninth to erase a 5-3 deficit.

Zitzow, Kirk McLeod and Tappe each had RBI hits, while Buhr railed a two-out, two-run single to key the decisive inning.

Kirk McLeod went 3-5 with two RBIs in the game, as nine different Angels picked up hits.

Bertha will await the winner of Perham and Carlos, which play Saturday in Perham at 5 p.m.

The championship game is in Perham Saturday, starting at 8 p.m. The winner between Perham and Carlos will advance to state, with Bertha already earning their berth.
