Region expected to get second blast today, more snow on the way
Blizzard No. 2, capping off the last day of 2010, is expected across a large swath of the region, dumping up to a foot of snow in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota.
Thursday's blizzard, with winds topping 45 mph, brought 5 to 11 inches of snow from Fargo to Wahpeton and into Minnesota's lake country, the National Weather Service said.
In Fergus Falls, Minn., nearly a foot of snow fell.
And the region can expect more of winter's nastiness as the New Year approaches.
"Round two promises to be a bit more widespread in its reach," the weather service said. "Snow will spread north into southeastern North Dakota and west central Minnesota mid afternoon today and then reach the northern Red River valley and far northwest Minnesota by late evening."
The snow is expected to taper off by Saturday morning.
Wind gusts to 50 mph are possible tonight and early Saturday, making travel extremely difficult, if not impossible.
