Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

The Minnesota Department of Revenue recently revoked the sales tax permit of Ottertail Cedar Log Furniture Inc., for failing to file and pay sales tax to the state. According to the department, the business allegedly owes the state more than $57,000.

The department claims the furniture business, located at 201 State Highway 108 in Dent, failed to file and pay sales tax for periods between March and September 2011.

Minnesota sales tax is a "trust tax." Customers pay sales tax with the expectation that businesses will remit them to the state on their behalf. Sales tax cannot be used by a business as additional operating capital or for any other purpose.

If a person or company makes retail sales in Minnesota after revocation of their Minnesota sales tax permit, the action is considered a felony under Minnesota law.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue also recently revoked the sales tax permit of Steven L Harles, doing business as Harles Tree Service, for failing to file and pay sales tax to the state. According to the department, the business allegedly owes the state more than $38,000.

The department claims the business, which does landscaping and tree services, located at 17934 248th Ave in Fergus Falls, failed to file and pay sales taxes for multiple periods between September of 2007 and December of 2010.
