Relay for Life tonight at DL High School track

Though the advent of summer has traditionally been viewed to coincide with the start of Memorial Day weekend, the weather outside has not been cooperating -- until now.
The sunny skies and warm temperatures could not have come at a better time, as this weekend will be a very busy one for lakes area residents.
On Friday, the Becker County chapter of the American Cancer Society is preparing to host its annual Relay for Life at the Detroit Lakes High School track. The all-night-long event begins with a community dinner and silent auction from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes High School Commons Area.
There will be a cancer survivors' reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the track, in the survivors' tent, followed by kickoff ceremonies at 8 p.m. The luminaria lighting ceremony begins at 10 p.m. on the track, and Relay participants will continue walking the track throughout the night, raising funds and awareness.

On Saturday, the Humane Society of the Lakes will host its inaugural the Hawgs 4 Dawgs motorcycle ride and fund-raiser.
Registration for the ride will take place from 10 a.m. until noon at Zorbaz on West Lake Drive in Detroit Lakes, and bikers will depart from there at noon. From that point, riders will make stops at Charlie's Bar in Height of Land, Billy's Bar in Vergas, the Cormorant Inn in Cormorant Village, Pit 611 in Audubon and Izzo's in Detroit Lakes.
The ride will finish at The Sandbar in Detroit Lakes. Door prizes and drawings will take place at each stop, including Zorbaz merchandise, an overnight package from Shooting Star Casino, biking goggles, an American flag, and a biker hat and purse, among others.
Registration is $25 per couple, and $15 for a single ticket. The first 125 registrants will receive a free Hawgs 4 Dawgs (H4D) bandanna. For more information or questions, call (218) 234-9327 or (218) 841-6730.
The Humane Society will also host a Furr Bowl fund-raiser on Sunday, June 22 at Voyageur Lanes in Detroit Lakes from 4 to 6 p.m. Collect a minimum of $20 in pledges to bowl (three games and shoes included). Participants can sign up and get a pledge sheet by calling the Humane Society shelter in Detroit Lakes at 218-847-0511 or sending an e-mail to email@example.com. There will be prizes awarded for top pledges and top bowlers for both kids and adults.
But the fun doesn't stop on Sunday. Area students are invited to participate in the week-long Missoula Children Theatre workshop at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre, which starts Monday, June 23 and continues from 12:30-5 p.m. daily through Friday. This year's show, "The Wiz of the West," is a quirky twist to "The Wizard of Oz" and will feature 50-60 area students in grades 1-12. On Tuesday, June 24, the Becker County Senior Network and the Becker County Senior Citizen Council on Aging are putting on a Senior Fest at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will be in conjunction with the Becker County Outstanding Senior Recognition Program, and will be a day to celebrate the lives of all senior citizens in Becker County.
There will be a luncheon, entertainment, beneficial resources provided by our Senior Network providers, ice cream social and pontoons rides on beautiful Detroit Lake. The cost to attend the day's activities will be $2.
The schedule of events is as follows:
- 10 a.m.-4 p.m. -- Visit Senior Provider Educational Booths.
- 11:30 a.m.-12 noon -- Outstanding Senior Recognition Program.
- 12:15 - 1:00 p.m. -- Lunch.
- 1:15-2 p.m. -- Guest Speaker, Eric Bergeson.
- 2-4 p.m. -- Ice Cream Social, Pontoon Rides and Musical Entertainment.
