When Chuck Renner decided to start playing the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament in the Super Senior’s division, he set his goals pretty high.

After Sunday’s championship victory, Renner now has set the bar high for future Super Senior competitors.

Renner claimed his third-straight Super Senior’s title with a 5 and 4 win over Chuck Sjostrom. He now has won three of four Super Senior’s championship, while medaling three out of the four, as well.

But Renner’s inspiration during his Pine to Palm play was three-time champion Jack Rule, who won title in 1958-60.

“Jack Rule was from Iowa, like I am, so I thought it would be nice to win three like he did,” Renner said.

The past two tournaments, Renner also bypassed his automatic exemption for match play, instead tried to medal during qualifying.

Last year, he took medalist honors, but this year was second to medalist Clint Nelson, who shot two-under par 69, to Renner’s even par 71.

“There was just one disappointment this time, but Clint played very well,” Renner said.

Renner had four birdies on the front nine, but Sjostrom won holes seven and nine for a 1-up advantage.

Renner’s key run came with wins on holes 11 through 13, which included birdie putts of 15 to 25 feet on the last two.

“Chuck is a fantastic golfer and unfortunately for him, I caught him with an injury,” Renner said. “But Chuck really played well today.”

Nelson lost to Sjostrom in the semifinals 1-up, while Renner topped former Senior’s champion Joe Sauer in the final four 1-up in 20 holes.
