Rev. John Helm

Rev. John Arne Helm (Hjelmeseth), 85, Ashland, Wis., died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, in Memorial Medical Center in Ashland.

He was born May 8, 1922, in Chicago to Eilert Olaf and Sarah Dagma (Peterson) Hjelmeseth. He graduated from Luther (Institute) High School North in Chicago in1940, Saint Olaf College in Northfield in 1945, and Luther Theological Seminary in Saint Paul in 1948. During his high school years, he worked at Montgomery Ward. He married Ruth Elizabeth Rosser, on Oct. 16, 1948, in the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Chicago. Between 1948 and 1965, John was the pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran congregations in Saint Maries and Potlatch, Idaho; Frederick, Presho, Kennebec, Vivian and Hilmoe, S.D., and American Lutheran congregations in Bear River and Silverdale, Minn. He also worked for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Howe Richardson Scale Company and Lunds Grocery Stores in Minneapolis. In 1997, John came to Ashland so his wife Ruth could be helped with recovery from surgery by her special friends, Cary and Mary Wiik. He enjoyed playing the organ and Scrabble. He liked to sit on the deck at Rose Lake and go sailing. He enjoyed time with family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his three sons, Arne Eilert (Elizabeth Ruth Fredrickson) Hjelmeseth, Beach Park, Ill., Eilert Olaf Daniel (Mary Lou Shogren) Helm, Vergas, and Paul Magnus Helm, Elk River; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brother, Rolf Toralf Leif (Mary Lou Boyles) Helm, Sterling, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruth, on Jan. 22, 2000.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 3 p.m. in the Celebration Fellowship, Ashland, with Rev. J.D. Weber officiating.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland.

Spring interment will take place in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Ashland.
