Coming off two high-performance meets, the Detroit Lakes boys' Nordic skiing team continues to close the gap on the more traditional top teams.

The Lakers finished second only to Bemidji, but with just a little improvement -- roughly 30 seconds -- DL could have toppled the Lumberjacks.

Jake Richards won his second of three meets, topping Bemidji's Matt Lee by 12 seconds, after trailing the Lumberjack for much of the pursuit race.

"Jake was able to make his move towards the end of the race to win," said DL head coach Dan Josephson. "It was a bit more of a difficult course, so it spread out the more technical skiers from the ones who probably need a little more work on it."

Junior Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles finished in third by himself with a time of 19:26, while DL's younger skiers kept improving. Stephen Sinclair took 17th, Christian Tigges 20th and Hunter Schleske 21st.

Montana Johnson was 29th to round out the Laker lineup.

"Each of them are working on getting better and continue to make progress," Josephson said. "It's nice to see the kids noticing they are closing the gap on teams. They are getting motivated and excited."

The girls were once again led by eighth grader Berit Ramstad-Skoyles, who finished seventh with a time of 25:26.

Andrea Weiss made an improvement by finishing 12th at 26:58, while a host of Lakers finished in the top 25.

"It was a good race for our top few girls, they are also working hard to improve," the DL coach added.

The St. Cloud meet Thursday has been nixed. The Lakers will travel to Little Falls Monday for a 10 a.m. start.
