A memorial service celebrating Rita Meyer of Omaha, Neb., is set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with burial in the church cemetery.
Rita was born on Dec. 28, 1951 in rural Ogema. Her parents were Arthur B. and Florence (Perrault) Meyer. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Detroit Lakes, and graduated with the Class of 1970 from Detroit Lakes High School.
Rita continued her education at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and a master's degree in anatomy (developmental biology) from the University of Chicago.
Rita's career in research and education included teaching and working at various universities and medical schools and facilities. They included the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center in Minnesota; University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; Rutgers University in New Jersey; and Creighton University in Omaha, up until her death. Her career spanned over 35 years.
Rita especially enjoyed making trips to Minnesota with her loyal dog, Val, to visit family and friends. She often spent holidays with family, especially her favorite holiday, Christmas. She loved quilting, beading and quiet time. Her special presence was remarkable and often witnessed by her kind ways, big heart and gentle nature. She made a lasting mark on everyone that knew her.
Rita passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at the Lakeland Hospice Home in Fergus Falls, at 59 years of age, after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Preceding Rita in death were her father; mother; stepmother, Daisy Wallace; uncle, Merle Meyer; and great grand-niece, Nizhoni Lee Hamm.
Grateful for having shared in her life are Rita's siblings, Joseph Meyer of Ponsford, Rose Hinrichs of East Grand Forks, Bette Jo (Kerry) Herrmann of Richville, Arthur (Michelle) Meyer of Barnesville, Ronald (Mary) Hamm of Frazee, Allan Hamm of Frazee, Bryan (Penny) Hamm of Dilworth, Eileen Dillman of Tacoma, Wash., Kathleen (Charles) Ament of Centralia, Wash., Jeanine (Richard) Scahill of St. Louis, Mo., and Laurine (Craig) Larson of Alexandria; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
