Roderick D. Marteness, 96, of Lake Park, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15 in Strandvik Lutheran Church, rural Lake Park, with Rev. Randy Whitehead officiating. Friends may call for one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Valley City, N.D.
Roderick D. Marteness, known as Rod, was born to George W. and Mathilda (Randall) Marteness on May 15, 1917 in Cavalier, N.D. He was raised and educated in the Cavalier area and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho.
On June 15, 1940, Rod was united in marriage to Evelyn Sundstron in Val-ley City, N.D. He then worked as a section foreman for Northern Pacific (which later became the Burlington Northern) Railroad, living in Valley City, Killdeer, Hensler and Woodworth, N.D., prior to moving to West Fargo in 1957.
He retired in 1977 and the couple moved to their home near Rosman Lake in rural Lake Park. Evelyn died in 1993.
Rod enjoyed gardening, woodworking, winemaking, baking (especially bread), and was an avid reader and lifelong learner.
Survivors include two daughters, René Fuss and Candy (Dick) Skauge, both of Lake Park; a son, Bruce (Janice) Marteness of Cottage Grove, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Witschonke of Chicago, Ill., and Charlotte (Bill) Smiley of Bastrop, Texas.
In addition to his wife, Evelyn, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
