Rodney C. Olson, 59, Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, in St. Mary's Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes.
Rodney was born on Jan. 5, 1949, the son of Ernest and Marie (Abbott) Olson in Detroit Lakes. He was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1967. He then attended Detroit Lakes Vocational and Technical Institute for two years. Rodney began working for Larson-Peterson Associates as a civil engineer technician. In 1969, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Berlin, Germany, as a G2 Intelligence Specialist. Rodney returned to Detroit Lakes in 1971 and continued to work for Larson-Peterson Associates. He was united in marriage to Karen Mattson on May 29, 1976, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. As a senior civil engineer, he took great pride in designing many water treatment plants, including the Detroit Lakes waste water treatment plant. He designed many streets, water mains, buildings and utility projects and was a resident inspector for numerous civil engineering projects throughout West Central Minnesota. Rodney worked for Larson-Peterson Associates for 30 years, before retiring for health reasons. Rodney was a member of the Elks and a life member of the VFW. He enjoyed camping, hunting, tinkering with classic cars, collecting model cars, and playing guitar in his younger years. He also loved spending time at his cabin on Toad Lake.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Karen; two daughters, Gretchen (Trevor) Thilmony, Detroit Lakes, Kimberly (Jason) Paesler, Brainerd; three grandchildren; two brothers, Tom (Carol) Olson and Tim (Cheryl) Olson, both of Detroit Lakes; a sister, Connie (Greg) Bentson, Cohasset, Minn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edwin and Gloria Mattson, Detroit Lakes; sister-in-law, Elaine (Tom) Mack, Detroit Lakes, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services are Tues-day, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. in the Shell Lake Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Osage.
Visitation is Monday, Oct. 27, from 5-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7, in West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes.
Interment is in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Osage.
