Ronald Burton Fasteen, 83, of Detroit Lakes, passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
Ron was born on July 21, 1929 to Milton and Agnes Fasteen in Virginia, Minn. Shortly following his graduation from Virginia High School, Ron moved to Detroit Lakes, where he met his future wife, Helen Mae Wolff of Waubun.
Ron and Helen were married on April 22, 1951, before his enlistment in the United States Army in 1953. Ron served with the United States Army during the Korean War, where learned his trade in the correspondence business.
Following his discharge from the military, Ron, Helen, and son Bruce returned to the Detroit Lakes area, where he began his 47-plus year career with the Detroit Lakes newspaper.
Ron began his career as a linotype setter and proofreader, moving on to advertising, circulation, production of marketing, employee manager, and the commercial publication division.
Ron was an exceptional bowler and an avid golfer, with a passion for hunting. Ron loved deer hunting with his children, his father Milton, brother Don, father-in-law George, longtime companions Russell Wolff, Lloyd Beling and Richard Kvamme, along with Erling Eibs and Les Kuivanen.
Ron was very active with his family, service clubs including the Elks, American Legion, Eagles, VFW, civic committees such as the police committee, youth organizations including the youth baseball, youth football, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, First Lutheran Church and the board of directors. He was also a member of the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Half-Century Club.
Surviving Ron are his children, Bruce Fasteen of Fargo, Terry (Kathryn) Fasteen of Detroit Lakes, Susan (Dean) Berg of Detroit Lakes, Scott Fasteen of Bismarck, N.D., and Renee Fasteen (Tom Michon) of Detroit Lakes; six grandchildren, Neil (Jodi) Fasteen of Portland, Ore., Jeffrey Fasteen of Billings, Mont., Jennifer (Steve) Frank of Detroit Lakes, Kari (Jacob) Baer of Alexandria, Danny (Angela) Fasteen of Fargo and Dustin Barnes of Moorhead; four great grandchildren; and sister-in-law June Fasteen of Louisville, Ky.
Preceding Ron in death were Helen, his wife of 59 years; his parents; and his two brothers.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 6 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.
Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, and also one hour prior to Monday's services at the church.
Interment is in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
