Jan. 14, 1922-May 29, 2011
Ronald N. Moitzfield, 89, of Detroit Lakes died Sunday, May 29, 2011 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
He was the beloved husband of Mildred Moitzfield, loving father of Eileen (Bob) Burgess and Ronald (Gwen) Moitzfield; devoted grandfather of Theresa Oitker, Pamela (Shawn) Rasmussen, Brian Burgess, Scott Dever, Melanie Moore and Darren Moitzfield; and dear great grandfather of Rhianna Arreguin, Justin Staub, Katelyn Staub, Taylor Roberts and Haley Moore; great great grandfather of Jadyn Roberts; and brother-in-law to Bev Moitzfield and Helen Moitzfield.
Preceding Ron in death were his identical twin brother Don, and his other siblings, Carl, Maxine, Frances, and Everett; and his parents.
Ron was born to Otto and Eva (Nelson) Moitzfield on January 14, 1922 in Marengo, Iowa, and was raised from infancy by his aunt, Stella Nelson. Ron and his twin were highly regarded baseball pitchers in high school, but World War II interrupted that interest and in 1941 Ron enlisted in the Navy, where he served for six years.
He married the love of his life, Mildred Eileen Speas on April 24, 1943 in Minneapolis. They shared many happy years together. They were avid Minnesota Twins fans, and also loved to square and round dance.
Education was very important to Ron. He graduated from high school in Brooklyn, Iowa, then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Central College in Pella, Iowa, and a Master of Science degree from Florida Atlantic University. He later taught math and science in community colleges. His other interests included woodworking and gardening.
His career included several years as a high school teacher in Iowa and Illinois. Ron retired from IBM as an Education Specialist, where he also was involved with the Apollo Space Program.
Ron's religious faith was a vital part of his life, demonstrated by his dedicated service as an elder and Sunday school teacher.
