Rusness leads DL golfers in Brainerd
The depth of the Detroit Lakes boys' golf team continued to show as the Lakers had their fourth different lowman of the season, as freshman Austin Rusness shot a six-over par 78 Thursday at The Preserve for the Brainerd Invite.
No. 1 state-ranked Rogers won the team title with a 290, while the Lakers finished with a 328 on the day, with 20 teams competing.
"I was hoping for a little lower score, but it was an OK day," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "There still were some big numbers on holes here and there, too."
Rusness returned from a back injury. DL will be full strength in a couple of weeks when junior Tanner Lane is slated to return.
Connor Hedstrom maintained his consistent path with an 81, while Karter Smith shot an 84 and Nate Bausman rounded out DL's scorecard with an 85.
Tyler Baukol shot an 85 and Mike Herzog an 87.
The Staples-Motley Cardinals also topped DL by shooting a 322, which should make for an interesting Mid-State Conference meet, which will be at the Detroit Country Club May 18.
Colton Buege of Rogers was the meet's medalist with a one-under 70.
"Our putting needs to get better and we just need to be more consistent throughout the lineup," Gorden said.
The Lakers will play in the Fargo North Tournament at the Edgewood Golf Course Friday, starting a 1 p.m.
