It's time to say "grace" and be thankful for mouth-watering salads.

Members of Grace Lutheran Church are getting ready to whip up dozens of their favorite salads for the church's 12th annual Salad Luncheon.

The event takes place Friday, Sept. 7, going from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The $7 all-you-can-eat salad luncheon will be in the church, up on the hill, right across the street from Roosevelt Elementary School.

There will be four lines set up to expedite the process.

"That way if someone is working on their lunch break they can just hurry up and get their stuff and go," said Grace member Bertha Anderson, who is helping put the event together.

"We have every kind of salad that you can imagine -- taco salad, potato salad, crab salad, macaroni salad, fruit salad, jello salad, cole slaw, 7-layer salad, wild rice salad, oriental romaine salad, 3-bean salad, broccoli-cucumber salad, shoestring salad, copper penny salad, raspberry rice salad..." said Anderson, who likely could have gone on and on.

She says there seems to be a bit of a stampede for some of the most popular food items like the deviled eggs and fruit pizza.

Although the day is all about salads, there will be some homemade bread and bars snuck into the mix as well.

"And people can go up for seconds, too, as long as they grab another plate" said Anderson, who adds they will also have some To-Go boxes for those wanting to scoop and run.

Salad chefs will be ascending upon the church that morning with enough salad to feed Jesus, his 12 disciples and 387 of their closest friends.

"The most we've ever had is 400 people, so that's what we plan for," said Anderson.

The décor will once again show the patriotic tone of the event, which began right after the terrorist attack of 9-11.

"Our first salad luncheon was scheduled to be held three days after 9-11, so we decided to have a patriotic theme, and we have used that theme ever since," said Anderson.

For those wanting to avoid any kind of line, tickets for the event can be purchased ahead of time at the church office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

"This isn't just for women either, men have gotta eat, too," laughed Anderson.

Money raised goes to the church, which supports organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, the Becker County Food Pantry, Hospice of the Red River Valley, Lakes Crisis and Resource Center, Lutheran Social Services and also people in need both locally and in third world countries.

"You know, we've had so many people tell us how much they love our salad luncheon," said Anderson, "so we just invite everybody to come on out and enjoy our food and our fellowship."
