Sandstone, Minn., homeowner shoots, kills alleged intruder
SANDSTONE, Minn. -- A homeowner shot a man to death in an alleged home invasion near Sandstone early Thursday, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Deputies were called to a residence west of Sandstone at 2:38 a.m. on a report of a shooting.
A man described by police as elderly told deputies that two men entered his home in a robbery attempt. The man said at least one of the men had a gun. He said he was able to find his own gun and shot and killed one of the intruders.
The other man fled on foot, and a search ensued with the assistance of a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. Deputies said he probably fled to a vehicle nearby and left the area.
The incident remains under investigation with the help of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Pine County Sheriff Robin Cole talked about the incident during his weekly morning radio show today on WCMP-AM in Pine City.
Cole said he was on the scene at 3 a.m. and the gunshot victim “is known to the sheriff’s office.”
He said the homeowner is “OK,” as was a guest at the home at the time of the shooting.
