Screaming Eagles swarm Northern Wisconsin

Email

After a disheartening loss to Northern Power League leader South Metro two weeks ago, the Screaming Eagles football team rebounded in a big way with a 46-6 thwarting of Northern Wisconsin Saturday.

Lakes Area (5-1) returned to its dominating ways against the Thunderhawks in the Eagles' first road game of the season by outpacing the Wisconsin squad 397-59 in total yardage.

"Basically, there were big holes for our running game and our running backs got loose," said Lakes Area head coach and starting quarterback Jason McCloskey. "They were playing a 3-5 defense like the last time we played them and when you have that many guys in the box, you can go deep."

After establishing their rushing attack, going over the top is exactly what the Screaming Eagles and McCloskey did to gain a quick 12-0 advantage in the first quarter.

Both scores came on deep passes over the Thunderhawk's secondary, with the first going to running back Kyler Wegner on a 30-yard strike from the Eagles' QB and the second on a 35-yard play action catch by wideout Bert Smith.

McCloskey found the end zone two more times in the game through the air, the third coming in the second quarter on a five-yard swing pass to Wegner right before halftime for an 18-0 lead.

The aerial attack produced one more score, as McCloskey found a streaking Terrel Flanigan down the field for a 33-yard TD as the rout was on.

The Eagles' quarterback carved up the Thunderhawk defense for 224 yards on a 12-19 day, with a 4-to-1 TD-to-interception ratio.

Dave Moll paced the rushing game with 87 yards for a 7.9 yards a clip, including two end zone runs.

But once again, the Screaming Eagles' defense swarmed the opposing offense, suffocating any sort of drive the entire four quarters.

The Thunderhawks picked up a paltry 34 yards on the ground, while passing for only 53.

The only score came on a Sven Johanson 80-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.

"The defense was just swarming to the ball and once they stopped the rushing game, they were forced to throw," McCloskey said. "They didn't have much of a passing game, either."

iSecondary player Jake Lindsey picked off his seventh pass of the season, as well.

"Matt Scherzick and Casey Gibson clogged up the middle at their defensive tackle positions to control the line of scrimmage," the Eagles' coach included.

After six games, the Screaming Eagles have outscored their opponents by a hefty 194-73 edge.

They have almost doubled the offensive output yardage-wise by a 2,050-1,101 advantage, while racking up 21 sacks and 19 turnovers defensively.

The passing attack has also flourished, with McCloskey posting 1,100 yards and tossing 15 touchdowns to six interceptions for a 134.6 QB rating.

"The rushing game does help the passing game, but the big thing has been forming chemistry in practice," McCloskey said. "It's a combo of both, because the passing game does open up our rushing attack, as well."

The Screaming Eagles will travel to Rochester Saturday. A win will clinch a top-two seed in the upcoming playoffs, while a win at South Metro on July 11 will seal a top-seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, which start July 18.
