The Cass County Sheriff's Office received a report of a missing hunter early Sunday in the Outing area of Beulah Township.

The man was found near his deer stand about 10 a.m. by a search team, comprised of the Sheriff's Office, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers and volunteers.

"It appeared the victim had fallen from his deer stand, causing an accidental discharge of his firearm resulting in a fatal gunshot wound," Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch said in a news release issued Monday.

The Sheriff's Office is withholding identification of the man until relatives are notified.

The incident remains under investigation pending autopsy results from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office in St. Paul.

On Saturday, a 72-year-old St. Paul man, Gene Arthur Berthiaume died while hunting from a deer stand.

Initially, authorities believed Berthiaume fell from his stand, leading to his death. However, after receiving a report from the coroner's office, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said Monday that Berthiaume died from natural causes, and not from falling from the deer stand.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said responded Saturday to a call for assistance from hunters in the Saum area after they found Berthiaume under his deer stand.

First responders found Berthiaume in a wooded area off Pioneer Road Northeast in Woodrow Township. Emergency workers administered first aid to Berthiaume, who died at the scene.
