Semi driver critically injured in Friday night accident
The Minnesota State Patrol headquartered in Brainerd reported a semi-versus pickup truck accident, which occurred at 6 p.m. Friday two miles west of Bena.
Gerald R. Schultz, 58, of Deer River, was driving a 1997 Dodge Ram east on Highway 2. Dennis Underwood, 58, of Hermantown, Minn., was also driving a 1993 Volvo WHGM semi east on Highway 2. The semi sideswiped the pickup truck. The semi overturned and came to rest on the west side of the highway.
Underwood suffered a collapsed lung and possible broken ribs in the crash, according the State Patrol report. He was flown to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth where he remained in critical, but stable, condition Saturday morning.
Schultz was not injured.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
