Senior fishing looking for funds
Now that the Detroit Lakes Area chapter of Let's Go Fishing with Seniors has established itself, organizers are looking for funds to pay for the pontoon, fishing gear and other supplies needed for the first year of operation.
The pontoon is here and was on display during the Capital for a Day celebration and will also make an appearance at the upcoming Street Faire at the Lakes, May 31-June 1.
"We are in full-blown fund-raiser mode and we need to target between the $37,000 and $45,000 range is what we need to raise for the first year's operations" said Jarred Bridgeman, who sits on the Let's Go Fishing with Seniors board and is in charge of fund-raising.
Let's Go Fishing is a non-profit organization that gets seniors out on the lake whether it is for fishing or just enjoying a day out.
The first year's costs cover everything to get started including the pontoon, fishing rods and reels, lifejackets, bait, gas and oil.
Once the first year is through and the pontoon and gear is paid for, operating costs will be about $6,000 to $8,000 a year.
There will be advertising and recognition tools for those willing to donate to the organization.
"We're looking for a couple big players in the community to step up and really help with the program," Bridgeman said.
Although no specific fund-raiser is planned as of yet, he said the group is planning a kick-off -- "a maiden voyage if that's what you want to call it" -- in June.
At the Capital for a Day celebration, Bridgeman said several volunteers signed up to participate in the Let's Go Fishing program. There were also others asking how to get a group together and schedule a tour.
"There's obviously an interest, and everybody we talked to (at Capital for a Day) was just amazed that we were doing this type of thing for the community. Nothing but positive feedback."
