Senior Smiles: Detroit Lakes Class of 2012 graduates

A total of 203 graduating seniors received their diplomas at the 122nd commencement exercises of Detroit Lakes High School on Saturday, according to Superintendent Doug Froke.

Detroit Lakes High School Principal Steve Morben noted that approximately 210 seniors graduated from the district this year, including those who received their diplomas from the Area Learning Center earlier this month.

Speakers at the ceremony included the top two graduating seniors from the Class of 2012, Devin Lange and Cole Remmen. Froke and graduating senior Heidi Nelson gave the welcome, while Celeste Koppe delivered the farewell to the graduates.

In his brief address to the students, Morben said he talked about how seniors should "try to be the best for the world, as opposed to being the best in the world."

"We should measure success based on how we care for other people, how we serve others," he added.

DLHS social studies teacher Bill Kvebak was also invited by the seniors to address the audience at the ceremony.

The Outstanding Senior for the Class of 2012, as voted on by classmates, was Morgan Nodsle.

The afternoon ceremony also featured performances by the Laker Singers, Concert Choir and Symphonic Band.

Froke said that the challenge of each commencement ceremony is to give each graduating senior their "moment" while making sure that the ceremony doesn't last so long that the audience becomes uncomfortable.

"I think we did a pretty good job," he said, adding that the ceremony was completed in about an hour and a half.
