Several hurt in area auto accidents
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

Several people have been injured in auto accidents in the area over the past few days.

One person was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on Richwood Road near Bakke Lutheran Church on Tuesday afternoon.

A passenger in one of the vehicles, Amber Bevins, 28, of Bemidji was pinned in the wreckage and had to be extricated by firefighters. She was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes in unknown condition.

The accident occurred about 3:15 p.m. as a northbound 1994 Oldsmobile was coming out of a sharp curve west of the church. It was driven by Linda Bevins, 51, of White Earth. Amber Bevins was the sole passenger in her car.

The Oldsmobile collided with a 2007 Ford Edge SUV driven by Nancy Holmer, 44, of Perham. There was one passenger in her vehicle, Wanda Green, 49, of Perham.

The Oldsmobile was totaled and the Edge sustained moderate to severe damage.

Everybody in both vehicles was banged up a bit and suffered minor injuries, but Amber Bevins was the only one transported to the hospital, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office.

Richwood Road was shut down for perhaps 20 minutes so firefighters and EMS workers could do their jobs.

Road conditions were not glare ice but not perfectly clear either, with slush and glazing in some areas.

No citations were immediately issued, but the accident is under investigation and charges may be pending. The investigating officer with the sheriff's office will meet with the Becker County Attorney's Office to determine if charges are warranted.

A Detroit Lakes man was taken to the hospital following a two-car crash Monday morning at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Holmes Street.

Jacob Michael Pfeifer, 24, was heading eastbound on Holmes Street and slid past a stop sign into the intersection, according to the Detroit Lakes Police Department.

Pfeifer's 1999 Ford pulled in front of a 2000 Dodge sedan traveling south on Summit. The Dodge was driven by John Francis Saver, 54, of Detroit Lakes. He was not injured, according to the police report.

Conditions were icy at the time and Pfeifer told an officer that his car was having brake problems. He said he tried to steer to the right when he realized he would not be able to stop in time. Roads were icy but the intersection had been treated with sand.

Pfeifer was taken to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital with unknown injuries; the driver of the second vehicle was not injured.

A milk truck rolled over in Becker County Monday, injuring the driver. Ronald Rodney Wengiger, 46, of Wadena suffered minor injuries when the semi tractor trailer he was hauling milk in slid off the road and rolled into a ditch on 140th Street, about 7 miles north of Frazee, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office.

The semi was going less then 5 mph on the recently-graded dirt road that was glazed with ice.

The truck was hauling around 5,200 gallons of milk and a small amount of milk leaked into the ditch. The accident happened around 2 p.m.

Icy road conditions were at least partly to blame for at least 10 fender-benders or vehicles in the ditch in Becker County from Friday through Monday.

Several property damage accidents were also reported in Detroit Lakes -- including a taxi that was hit and run early Sunday morning on Elm Street.
