Shirley Jean Petersen was born the daughter of Albert and Josephine Petersen on November 28, 1932 in Springfield, Ill. She graduated from Wahpeton High School in Wahpeton, N.D., and attended University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. There she met Bob Kandt and they were married on June 11, 1951.
Shirley will be remembered as a wonderful wife, beloved mother and devoted businessperson and charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She was also involved with many community organizations including the Heritage Assembly, Kings Daughters, Cleburne Library Board and the "Birthday Club."
The Kandts operated the Ben Franklin Variety Store in Cleburne for over 40 years and Shirley's vivacious spirit was always welcoming to all who entered the doors.
Shirley chose to share her life with many -- her family, friends, neighbors, and church members all formed the large circle in which she lived her life to the fullest.
One of Shirley's greatest gifts was she never met a stranger, she was always interested in everyone she met.
The Kandts would like to express special gratitude to the friends, doctors, and caregivers that prayed for and comforted her throughout this journey.
Surviving Shirley are her husband of 59 years, Bob Kandt; son, Jeff Kandt of Cleburne; and her daughter, Rebecca Kandt (Robert) Roe of Cleburne. She also leaves two loving grandchildren, Ryan and Garrison Roe.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents, Albert and Josephine Petersen, and sister, Diane Toelle.
