If there was such a play to prove a team is out to exert their will against another, the Detroit Lakes offense had that play.

On the very first snap of Wednesday's regular season finale against visiting Duluth East, junior bulldozing fullback Alex Mason kicked it into high gear after running through a huge hole between the tackles and rambling 65 yards to paydirt, which was the start of a 55-32 lambasting of the Greyhounds.

The play took 10 seconds and the Lakers were out to a quick 7-0 lead after Steven Labine's point-after kick, as the rout continued the rest of the 47:50.

"The offensive linemen just hit all their guys and all I saw was a huge hole and a lot of field," Mason said of his 65-yard touchdown. "We just kept running the ball up the middle from there."

And the middle was a prosperous place for the Lakers and Mason, as the fullback amassed 191 yards of rushing and the DL offense once again put up supreme numbers with 447 yards of total offense.

That makes it a total of 1,070 yards of offense DL has put up in its last two games alone -- and capping a six-game winning streak.

"These kids have developed confidence in their teammates and that is important heading into the playoffs," said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher.

After starting the season 0-2, the Lakers reeled off six wins in a row to capture the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Section 8-4A playoffs. DL will host No. 7 St. Cloud Apollo (1-7) Tuesday, starting at 7 p.m.

It didn't take long, either, for the Lakers to establish complete ground dominance on the Greyhound defense, as they scored on their first seven possessions.

After the one-run series, the Lakers put together a time consuming 12-play, 90-yard drive.

Mason accumulated 45 yards of rushing in the drive, while junior quarterback Joe Mollberg reminded Duluth East the Lakers still have a potent aerial attack.

Mollberg hit junior wideout Rick Hutchinson in stride over the middle on fourth and five for a 21-yard TD strike.

Mason capped DL's third series with a 10-yard end zone romp, putting the Lakers up 20-0.

The Mollberg Field grass was getting torn up by Mason's cleats, as the junior fullback recorded a whopping 148 yards of rushing in the first quarter alone.

Four more touchdowns in the second quarter put DL firmly in control 48-16 at halftime, as DL maintained solid drives on the ground ending in the end zone.

Mason and Mollberg each had two touchdowns in the second quarter, with the former finishing with four rushing TD's in the game.

"They were playing soft in the middle, so we just tried to take advantage of that," Motschenbacher said of Mason's success, in which he didn't have one run for negative yardage in his 16 carries.

The Greyhounds did find some limited success through the air, as quarterback Alex Toscano hit Nick Carlson for touchdown passes of 21 and 10 yards in the second quarter.

The Lakers' second and third stringers saw plenty of action in the second half, as Jon Gilson capped DL's scoring in the third quarter with a three-yard run.

Labine was 6-7 on PAT kicks, while Labat and Jordan Manning each had interceptions.

Josh Eggebraaten and Mason also had single sacks in the victory.

If the Lakers defeat St. Cloud Apollo Tuesday, they will host the winner between No. 3 Alexandria and No. 6 Rocori.

In the lower bracket, No. 1 Sartell will host No. 8 Fergus Falls and No. 5 Little Falls will face No. 4 Sauk Rapids.

The semifinals will be Saturday, Oct. 30, while the championship game will be Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. John's University starting at 1 p.m.
