Smith and Herzog open season well for Lakers
The defense of the state championship has finally started for the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf team, as they opened the season in the Tri-State Meet at Edinburgh Friday and Saturday.
The Lakers were just happy to finally get back on the course, while finishing 12th out of 20 teams.
“We had an OK start,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “We found we have some work to do and spots are open for the next event. Michael Herzog and Karter Smith were pretty good the first time out, but some had trouble on greens with first time putting and chipping.”
Smith had a solid first day, carding a three-over par 75, while stroking an 80 on day two for a 155. Herzog followed with an 81-76 for a 157.
Sophomore Ben Mallow shot 85-86 for a 171 total, while Sam Goral carded a one-day score of 85 and Tanner Schnathorst a 92.
Minnetonka took top team honors with a 604, while Century’s Chris Captain won individual laurels with a 71-68-139.
The Lakers played Wednesday at Blueberry Pines in Park Rapids to qualify for the Fargo North Invite Friday and Saturday, which has been moved to Fergus Falls’ Pebble Lake Golf Course.
Friday’s action starts at 1:50 p.m. A second Laker team will play in the Providence Academy Invite Friday in St. Michael at Fox Hollow Golf Course.
