The first round matched DL against No. 11 Sauk Rapids-Rice (5-14), while No. 3 Big Lake (10-9) awaited the winner in the nightcap in the double elimination portion of the tournament.

Brainerd (16-2) earned the top seed, while Becker (17-2) is No. 2. The third round of the playoffs is Monday, May 26 at the high seed.

The Lakers capped the regular season with a split in the Thief River Falls triangular against the Prowlers and East Grand Forks. They topped EGF 6-5, but fell to TRF 12-7.

A three-run double by third baseman Kyra Vagle in the bottom of the sixth inning put DL up 6-5, after trailing 5-3 entering the frame against the Green Wave.

Back-to-back singles by Maycen Kirchner and Llecenia Burnside to lead off the sixth, set up a bases loaded situation after Carolyn Kinney drew a one-out walk.

That led to Vagle’s fence-hitting double to clear the bases to erase the two-run deficit.

Relief pitcher Emma Maguire shutout the Wave in the final two innings to secure the win. Vagle also made a nice dagger play behind shortstop from her third base position to help in the bottom of the seventh.

“It was a big win for our QRF and helped us secure the sixth seed,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “Emma pitched well in the final two innings and Kyra had a big day at the plate for us.”

Vagle went 3-3 with three RBIs, while DL collected a total of nine hits.

The Prowlers struck for five runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth for the 12-7 win, as DL made a stab at the lead with a four-run seventh, but fell short.

Vagle went 3-3 again, while Emma Schiltz and Emily Seebold each had a hit with two RBIs. Kinney added two hits, as did Rachel Ianiro.

“Thief River Falls is a good hitting team (nine hits) and we didn’t have the best defense (three errors),” Kirchner said. “We just need to play better against good teams like that.”

Chaz Butz was hit with the loss, while Maguire and Vagle each saw action on the mound, as well.
