The shortened 2013 season now comes down to a one and done scenario for the Detroit Lakes softball team, as they earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Section 8-2A tournament.

The Lakers will need to get by No. 4 Hawley on the road to advance to the double-elimination portion of the playoffs, as DL travels to play the Nuggets Tuesday for a 5 p.m. start.

“It comes down to if we can field the ball and pitch well,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “We need to play good defense to win.”

The Lakers closed out the regular season at home Thursday, losing to Staples-Motley twice in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader by the scores of 5-1 and 8-6.

“We ran into a good pitcher and a team which could hit the ball well,” Kirchner said of the Cardinals, who improved to 11-6 on the season. “But we didn’t beat ourselves with errors.”

The Lakers’ lone run in the 5-1 loss came off the bat of junior Brooke Olson, who laced a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Chaz Butz was hit 12 times by the Cardinals, while she only walked one and struck out three.

The second game saw DL put up five runs in the fifth inning, which included a leadoff homer by senior shortstop Kathryn Kinney.

Senior Hannah Ianiro also gained an RBI with a two-out double to tie the game at 7-7.

But the Cardinals used three hits in the sixth frame to score the eventual winning run.

“Chaz pitched better in the second game, but we left the bases loaded a couple of times,” Kirchner said.

Kinney finished going 2-4, while Kyra Vagle was 2-4 and Sadie Larson was 1-4 with two RBIs.
