Spartans to have host of experience in 2011 season

There will be 11 seniors to lead the potent Ulen-Hitterdal Spartans into the 2011 season, which makes them a contender by the time the playoffs come rolling around.

The Spartans will be tested early, too, and will know where they stand when they host nine-man power Stephen-Argyle in the season opener Thursday, Sept. 1.

But no matter how that contest turns out, Ulen-Hitterdal brings back a bevy of talent and experience, which will make them a dangerous team nonetheless.

"We're going to be relying on those 11 seniors," said U-H head coach Dustin Flaten. "Our expectations will be that we are right up there in the conference and the section."

The offensive line will set the pace for the Spartans, with eight players being able to play any of the positions.

Those include seniors Travis McCollum, Jerrell Green, Troy Peterson (tight end) and junior Jacob Brooks.

The majority is big, as well, going 215-plus pounds.

"They are good at their rush blocking, so we'll be able to pound the ball," Flaten included.

Benefiting from the stout O-line will be the deep running back corp., which includes seniors Calvin Oberg, Nolan Briard, Green and Joe Iverson.

"Kelvin will be our fullback, who has good speed and is just an amazing blocker," Flaten said. "Briard will be our go-to guy, who has good vision and is able to make the cut."

Junior Landon Schultz was the Spartan's starter at quarterback in 2010 and returns, bringing a good arm in the passing game and is a smart, knowledgeable signal caller.

His targets will include Peterson, who will have good range at tight end, Briard and Green.

"We won't be the flashiest offense, but I'm expecting big things," Flaten said.

The defense should be fresh through the season, with up to eight players shuffling through the defensive line, with up to 13 players filling in spots.

Oberg, Peterson and senior Aaron Green make up a stout linebacking group, with Jerrell Green anchoring the backfield.

"With our depth, we should be durable all season," Flaten said.

Section 6 added traditional talented teams Hillcrest and Underwood, and also includes Waubun, Ada-Borup, Nevis, Norman County East, Rothsay and Park Christian.
