Rossman School honors

Rossman Elementary School in Detroit Lakes will celebrate its accomplishment in receiving the 2008 Minnesota Academic Excellence Spotlight Award with a special program from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. There will also be a special "Day at the Museum" Art Master's Open House.

Read with a dog

A Reading Assistance Education Dog (R.E.A.D.) will be at the Detroit Lakes Public Library from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Kids who read with the dog 10 times will be eligible to receive a free book. Pre-registration is not required, but you may call ahead to 847-2168 to reserve a 10-minute session with the therapy dog.

Genealogy class

Want to research your family history, Arent sure where to start? The come to the Detroit Lakes Library for a Beginning Genealogy class from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The class is free, but space is limited; call 847-2168 to register.

'Spirit Horse'

Roseneath Theatre of Toronto, Canada, presents the beautiful children's tale of "Spirit Horse" live at the Historic Holmes Theatre on Thursday, March 26. This story traces two children and their widowed father trying to hide a wild, white, "spirit" horse in their Calgary apartment. A gift from their grandfather, the Spirit Horse teaches the family to hope again by reconciling "the old ways" of their ancient heritage with their new modern life.

There will be two shows, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $8 each or $4 each for school groups. Call the Historic Holmes Theatre Box Office or order online at www.dlccc.org.

Scrapbooking class

Come in to the Detroit Lakes Library from 10 a.m. to noon for a scrapbooking class. Basic computer and mouse skills are needed. Class size is limited, so call the library to pre-register at 847-2168.

Storytelling event

The sixth annual Sharing the Tradition of Storytelling event is set for Friday, March 27, in the Frazee Event Center. Participants this year include storytellers Patricia Nunn, Michael Cotter, JoAnne Lower and John Peterson. The event begins at 7 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Lakes Crisis banquet

The Lakes Crisis & Resource Center of Detroit Lakes will have its 19th Annual Banquet on Friday, March 27, with both silent and live auctions, musical entertainment by Tim Eggebraaten and more. The theme of "Families: Life's Precious Jewels" will be carried out through a variety of activities. Tickets are $30. Contact Jill Link at 218-847-8572 for more information.

North Country Trail

Association

The public is invited to the first quarter meeting of the Laurentian Lakes Chapter of the North Country Trail Association at the DL Library. All City Band Concert

The Detroit Lakes Public Schools band program will host its 46th annual All-City Band Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes High School Gymnasium. It will feature two selections from each band, with students in grades 5-12 combining forces for en masse for the finale. Tickets are available in advance from any DL band student or at the door on the night of the performance. Cost is $4 for adults, $2 for students in grades 6-12 and free for those in grades 5 and under. The public is invited.

Home & Garden Show

The 24th Annual Home and Garden Show gets underway from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes. Tickets are $5. More information is available on the Lake Region Builders Association Web site at www.lakeregionbuilders.com.

Work Release

The Ice House Restaurant inside Detroit Lakes' ClubHouse Hotel will host a performance by the band Work Release from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There is no cover charge; call 847-2121 for more information.

Home & Garden Show

The 24th Annual Home and Garden Show concludes today, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes. Tickets are $5.

Monday, March 30

José Cole Circus

The José Cole Circus will be making a stop at Detroit Lakes' Kent Freeman Arena on Monday, March 30, for a 7 p.m. show. Sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 3166 of Detroit Lakes, the show will include a mixture of clowns, aerial artists, live animal acts and more.

Tickets are available at Central Market and North Shore Travel Plaza in Detroit Lakes as well as Orton's Tesoro in Audubon through 5 p.m. on March 29, and will also be on sale at the door.

Cost is $9 for adults and $6 for children. A portion of the proceeds will go towards local charitable projects.

Thursday, April 2

Shrine Circus

The Shrine Circus returns to Detroit Lakes' Kent Freeman Arena for three shows, at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. This year's all-new show includes aerial artists, acrobats, contortionists, comedy and more. Tickets are $5 per person.
