Spring Gala, Herman tribute April 30 at Holmes
The Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes will get you into the spring spirit with its Spring Gala and "A Tribute to Woody Herman" on Friday, April 30.
This will be a night to reconnect with friends after a long winter. The evening starts off with a social and formal three-course meal at 5:30 p.m., followed by "A Tribute To Woody Herman at 7:30 p.m."
The swinging tribute features a 17-piece band comprised of musicians from Fargo/Moorhead and the Lakes area, re-creating some of Woody Herman's patented excitement (and maybe just a little nostalgia).
Woody Herman led one of the most influential big bands in the history of Jazz for over 50 years, from his start leading "The Band That Plays the Blues" in the mid-'30s, through numerous editions of his "Swinging Herd," until his death in 1987. Dozens of top jazz musicians got their start playing in Woody's band.
During the band's heyday from the late '30s through the early '50s, Woody had more Top 40 songs than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, or even the Beatles.
Spring Gala ticket prices are $25 per person. Woody Herman tribute tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for students. For more information, stop by the Holmes Theatre box office at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes, call 218-844-SHOW (7469) or visit www.dlccc.org.
