Staples-Motley hand Laker girls' basketball a loss

Despite being able to handle a smothering Staples-Motley full-court press, the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team couldn't come up with enough offense to stay close to the Cardinals in a 59-41 loss Friday.

The Lakers' offensive attack was hindered with the loss of leading scorer Kayli Muckenhirn, who suffered a broken nose early in the game after netting two points.

From there, DL was able to hang tough with the Mid-State Conference favorites up to the midway point of the second half, where the Cards stretched their lead to 10 points to glide from there on.

"This was a good barometer game for us," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "We found out we are not where we need to be, but they are improving from game to game.

"The kids also found out they need to play a full 36 minutes of good basketball, not just 30 minutes, because those six minutes will kill you."

The Lakers stayed close to S-M and trailed only by six points at halftime at 24-18.

The inside duo of forwards Courtney Gray and Jenny Matter kept DL on pace up through to the second half, as the former notched 14 points and the latter 13.

"Courtney (Gray) is transitioning to the varsity game well and she has a nice inside touch on her shots," Hoganson said.

Point guard Courtney Hedstrom also hit for two three pointers to net the bulk of her eight points.

The Cardinals were led by Nikki Pearson and Caitlin Robinson, who each gained 15 points.

"They were able to extend our zone and they found the holes and creases for some open shots," Hoganson said of S-M's offense.

The Lakers will host Fergus Falls (0-1) Saturday, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
