Three Detroit Lakes Nordic skiers capped what is now known as the best Laker season ever, after doing well in the state meet at Giant's Ridge Thursday.

Sophomore Jake Richards finished just outside of the top 20 with a 21st place finish in the pursuit, while his teammate, junior Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles placed well above his desired top 80 goal with a 59th place ranking.

In the girls' state meet, eighth grader Berit Ramstad-Skoyles broke the ice on her hopeful state career with a 106th place finish overall.

"This was the best DL season ever," said Laker head coach Dan Josephson.

Richards actually had a very strong skate event showing, finishing eighth overall in the morning race with a time of 15:00.

But his classic afternoon race didn't go as well, as Richards slipped to 21st with a time of 15:19.

"Jake felt a little let down after his classic race, it was just that the older kids in the event were a little stronger and that favored them," Josephson said.

"Overall, the classic race comes down to strength. But he did have a very strong skate race."

Finishing 59th was much higher than Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles' goal of at least a top 80 placing, with the skate race being his key for the day, as well.

He raced for a 16:18 time in skate and a 15:32 in classic for his final pursuit time of 31:49.7.

"Dylan's skate race put him in good position," Josephson said. "He also had a good classic race, with a good kick, and he was able to pass a ton of people."

The first state meet for Berit Ramstad-Skoyles was a good eye-opener for potential return trips.

She raced for a time of 20:32 in her skate, while finishing with a 20:38.2 in her classic for a pursuit mark of 41:10.2.

"She had a good race, considering she's just an eighth grader (one of eight in the state girls' meet), so that's going to be good for her future," Josephson added.

Winning the girls' individual state title was Jessie Diggins of Stillwater with a time of 31:28.5, while the boys' champion was Raleigh Goessling of C-E-C with a mark of 28:41.4.
