Street Faire this weekend in Detroit Lakes
It's been nearly a decade since a new summer tradition was instituted in Detroit Lakes, and after nine years, the Street Faire at the Lakes is going stronger than ever.
The ninth annual incarnation of the lakes area's inaugural summer festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31 in downtown Detroit Lakes.
Continuous live music and a variety of tasty food offerings complement the event's main attraction: More than 250 regional artists and artisans displaying their wares for sale throughout the weekend. Featured artists include Ulmer Stoneware of Frazee; Follow the Muse, which produces sculptures and jewelry; Francis Metal Works; and Jay Steinke Photography.
The live music portion of the festivities gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with a performance by acoustic folk rock artist Tim Eggebraaten of Detroit Lakes; he will be followed by Lehto and Wright, a progressive Celtic folk rock trio from Minneapolis, starting at noon.
More acoustic folk music is planned for the afternoon, as Bettina Villamil performs on both the violin and mandolin, starting at 2:30 p.m. Vincent & the Van Goes, a popular local band, rounds out the afternoon's entertainment with a set from 4 to 6 p.m.
A special stage has been set up on Holmes Street for the musical entertainment.
But the fun doesn't end when the sun goes down; the Eagles Club will host street bingo from 6 to 8 p.m., and Fuse will provide the live music for a street dance, which takes place from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Sunday's live performances include Patchouli at 11:30 a.m. and Doc & the Scrubs at 2 p.m.
Performers on both days will include returning favorites such as string musician Paul Imholte and Ecuador Manta.
Throughout the event, food vendors will provide tasty offerings for the vegetarian and carnivore, the health conscious and those who prefer to indulge their cravings for less healthy fare.
There will also be kids' entertainment in the form of barrel rides, on the north side of Washington Square Mall; and the WonderWeavers, who will once again bring their special mix of storytelling, arts and crafts to the festivities.
