Suicidal man displays knife at Grand Forks church

A suicidal man displayed a knife inside Hope Evangelical Covenant Church in Grand Cities Mall this morning, frightening a church employee but not actually posing any threat, according to police and the pastor.

The call came in shortly before 11 a.m. today. A man who knew a family member of a church staff member and was troubled came in, showing a knife, said the Rev. Paul Knight.

Sgt. Bill Macki said the man was suicidal and agreed to go to Altru Hospital for help.

The man never threatened anyone but apparently had posted a note mentioning suicide on the Internet, Knight said.

The man had recently attended the church and seemed to be seeking help, Knight and Macki said.

The church was filled with young students from Riverside Christian School in East Grand Forks who were rehearsing their Christmas program and those activities were only briefly halted during the incident.

Police, the fire department and an Altru ambulance responded.
