Sunday is Family Day at Northwest Water Carnival
The 79th Annual Northwest Water Carnival is in full swing in and around Detroit Lakes this weekend. Today (Sunday) is Family Day, with a wide range of family-friendly activities planned.
A Young Life non-denominational worship service kicks off the day at 10:30 a.m. in the Pavilion. This precedes a family picnic at the 11:30 a.m. in the city park.
Ahoy Mateys! A ship building contest hits the beach near the pavilion at high noon. A sand treasure dig for coins and candy begins at 1 p.m.
Think you can walk on water…in a big ball? This family-friendly exercising event goes from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the City Park. Face painting and trolley rides will get the kids dressed up and pumped up, with both happening from 1-3 p.m. at the City Park.
Kids 15 and under can catch a big one at the Fishing Extravaganza from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the City Beach Fishing Pier.
Always a kid-favorite is the Frog Jump and Turtle Race, kicking off at 1:30 p.m. at the City Park. Bring your own turtle or frog. Not into slow-moving amphibians? Also at 1:30 p.m. are the Sand Castle Contest and a Pup Plunge at the pavilion beach.
What’s even cuter than puppies? Babies. The Toddler Trot will have babies crawling and “running” for champion-ship honors, with races that begin at 2 p.m. at the City Park. Hula Hoopers get your swivel on for a 2:15 p.m. competition at the park, before a Water Bal-loon Toss competition at 2:45 p.m. Old Fashioned Kids’ Games begin at 3 p.m., followed by a watermelon feed at 3:15 p.m. and a kids’ music show at 3:30 p.m.
