Support Detroit Lakes levy referendum
As a school board member for the past 13 years, I have seen first-hand what an excellent teaching staff, responsible administration, and dedicated support staff make up the district team that provides the education and programming our district offers. It is the reputation of excellence that our district enjoys that helps attract other families and businesses to locate in our community. It is essential to maintain strong schools in order to attract potential employees for our jobs and businesses as well as employers and businesses to create jobs.
Our district has been good stewards of our tax dollars over the years, and despite difficult economic times, we have continued to maintain a balanced budget. In the last four years alone, we have cut over $2 million from our budget. Class sizes in the elementary schools have had to go from 20-22 per class up to 29 per class in some cases. Students, parents and supporters have donated time and money to help offset the costs of our activities and fine arts for our kids, saving our taxpayers over $100,000 per year. These are only a few of the examples of how we have had to adjust our budget.
On Nov. 3, we are asking district voters to help us by increasing our present referendum levy by an additional $138 per pupil unit, for a total of $457 per pupil unit.
We need your help to continue to provide quality education to our district children. Please vote yes for DL kids on Nov. 3.
