Sweeto Burrito sets up food truck in DL

It’s a quick lunch when driving or walking down the street-o.

Sweeto Burrito has set up a truck along West Lake Drive right across from the Detroit Lakes City Beach.

But if you’re looking for a run-of-the-mill burrito, this isn’t the place.

“We’re not really your typical burrito,” said truck manager Mike Davis, who works for Starmark Hospitalities – a company out of Fargo that owns several area restaurants.

The menu boasts unique burrito combinations like the “All American” with bacon cheeseburger and French fries and sauces wrapped in a tortilla, as well as what is turning out to be Sweeto’s most popular burrito in Detroit Lakes — the White Chick.

“That’s a marinated white chicken with white rice and black beans, lime juice, salsa, cilantro ranch and sour cream. It’s really good,” said Davis, who says the truck is leasing the spot from when it opened May 31 through October.

It’s been a pretty big hit down here,” said Davis. “It was tough the first two weeks because we didn’t have a credit card machine, but once we got that, things really picked up.”

Sweeto Burrito is a franchised business that started as a food truck in the oil fields of western North Dakota in 2011.

The menu was simple: Burritos, bowlers (ingredients in a bowl served with rice and beans instead of a tortilla), soda and water.

The Buff Chick burrito is stuffed with chicken strips, tater tots, cheddar cheese, sweet hot buffalo sauce and cilantro ranch.

The Smoke House burrito has cheddar cheese, smoked chicken, bacon, onion rings and cilantro ranch.

Several more specialties were mastered within Sweeto Burrito and once people started getting a taste of the unique blends, word spread like wildfire.

So did the interest in opening up more of them.

Today, there are over 300 Sweeto Burrito locations in eight different states — all in less than three years.

Many who buy into Sweeto Burritos first branch out with trucks to get a feel for how well they do in particular cities, which is what Davis says his company did in Detroit Lakes.

“They do that to see if they can build on a business, building a following to see if it will make sense to put themselves out there,” said Davis, who adds that if the truck remains successful in Detroit Lakes, it’s possible a permanent location could be built.

Even if that doesn’t happen, Davis says the food truck industry as a whole has taken off and his sales so far in Detroit Lakes have been what many full-service bricks and mortar restaurants do.

“The food truck is so big because we can bring things to people that they won’t normally see on a restaurant menu,” said Davis.

“Where can you go to get a bacon cheeseburger wrapped up in a burrito or smoked chicken burrito that’s got onion rings and bacon in it? It’s just something different for people’s palates.”

Davis says he believes another reason the burritos are so popular is because they’re filling.

“Five bucks for half a pound or 10 bucks for a pound is a steal. You’re not going away hungry ever,” said Davis, who adds that the company that owns the Detroit Lakes Sweeto Burrito has purchased the rights to a handful of surrounding states, and is rapidly expanding into cities throughout North Dakota and Minnesota.               

“I know they can’t expand much further north (from Grand Forks), so they’re wanting to push east,” said Davis, who says they’ve only needed a handful of people to work the truck seven days a week. A couple of them, including Davis, come from Fargo while a few others have been hired from Detroit Lakes.

Right now the truck is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except for a quiet Sunday evening 8 p.m. closing.

The occasional bout of very bad weather may also shut them down.

However, as more people get trained in, Davis says they’ll add more burritos to their eight-burrito menu, including some breakfast burritos.

“Eventually I think what we want is to go 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. to get some of the late-night crowd heading home after the bars close,” said Davis, who expects to begin some expanded weekend hours by the 4th of July.
