After enduring three straight years of losing in the section semifinals, United Clay Becker senior Mason Swegarden broke through and won the Section 8-2A 145-pound division, making it his second berth in the state wrestling meet.

Now Swegarden is a state placer.

The UCB captain and the all-time leader in wins at Lake Park-Audubon, wrestled his way to a fourth-place finish in the 145-pound division.

Swegarden won his first two matches with a 4-1 victory in the opening round over Aaron Sweeney of Watertown-Mayer Friday inside the Xcel Energy Center. He advanced to the semifinals after a convincing 17-6 win over Monticello’s Jake Berthiaume.

In the semifinals, Swegarden lost to eventual state champion Brady Berge of Kasson-Mantorville 11-4, while falling to Jacob Steibauer of Waconia in the bronze bout 6-4.

UCB sophomore Jonah Lange made his state debut at 170 pounds, where he lost to Cannon Falls’ Derek Johnson in the first round 10-2. Lange was eliminated after Johnson lost his match in the quarterfinals.

Class 2A state individual meet at the Xcel Energy Center, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-March 1.
