Teen charged in Orton's robbery
An Audubon teenager has been charged in Becker County District Court with simple robbery, a felony, for allegedly robbing Orton's convenience store Jan. 25.
Jared Nathan Danielson, 17, of 12682 Dorff Beach Road, Audubon, appeared before District Judge Peter Irvine Tuesday.
At 12:24 a.m. on Jan. 25 Audubon police Chief Eric Hegna was on patrol and noticed a young man running north from Orton's to the BNSF railroad tracks, according to court records.
As he begin running east on the tracks, the officer put his squad car spotlight on him and noticed he was wearing a baseball cap and black coat. At the same time, an employee came out of Orton's, pointed at the male on the tracks, and told the officer that he had just robbed the store.
The officer drove to where he had last seen the suspect, met a 1988 Buick heading west, and activated his overhead lights, stopping the car.
There were six occupants in the car, and all identified Danielson, who allegedly admitted to the officer that he had just robbed Orton's, according to court records.
He said the money was in the pouch behind the driver's seat. The officer found $266 there and photographed it.
Danielson allegedly admitted walking behind the counter of Orton's and trying to open the cash register. When he couldn't do it, he ordered an employee to do it, then grabbed the money and ran.
Others in the car included a 19-, 18-, 17- and 15-year-old, all of Detroit Lakes, and 15-year-old girl from Detroit Lakes, according to the sheriff's department.
Judge Irvine ordered that Danielson continue to be held at the Moorhead juvenile detention center pending a March 4 hearing before Judge Mark Hansen.
