Thanks to those who made Kiwanis Holiday Wish Program successful
The Detroit Lakes Kiwanis were pleased to sponsor the Holiday Wish Program once again this past holiday season. This was the 13th year of the program, which was conceived by Kiwanis member Al Boehne back in 1999. The program is all about helping families or individuals who have suffered some misfortune and could benefit from some help during the holiday season.
KRCQ radio (FM102.3) runs ads promoting the program and requests that letters be sent to Kiwanis nominating individuals and families to receive a holiday wish. A committee then reads the letters and chooses the individuals or families that will be granted cash gifts of up to $250. Some of the letters have been read on air at KRCQ; however, the anonymity of those receiving donations has always been preserved.
The number and amount of holiday wishes granted has varied each year. In 2011, the program made 42 gifts totaling $9,500. Kiwanis members, local businesses, and other individuals have been encouraged to donate to the program. And each year, the local Kiwanis chapter has provided $2,500 in matching funds.
Thank you from Kiwanis to everyone who helped make this important community service project a success this past year. -- Kim Mollberg, Detroit Lakes Kiwanis Club
