The week of May 3-7 was "all about sports" at St. Mary's Innovis Health, as employees gathered for a series of Spirit Week activities.

Some of the activities included a Tailgate Party, Game Day, sports trivia and cheer contests, and non-sports activities such as a bulk food sale and employee appreciation breakfast.

Drawings were also held for various prizes including Twins and Red Hawks tickets, wood duck and bluebird houses, gift certificates to area restaurants and season passes for Detroit Lakes High School sports.

Spirit Week activities were hosted by ROOTS, an employee membership club that donates funds for various patient and resident-oriented projects on the SMIH campus, through St. Mary's Foundation.

The official kickoff for the Spirit Week celebration was an announcement that ROOTS members were donating $106,000 to St. Mary's Innovis Health for "greatest need" projects.

"Our goal was to fulfill as many requests as possible as long as they benefited our patients and residents," said Jackie McKenzie, RN and chair of the ROOTS committee. "I'm proud to say because of such strong employee support, we were able to touch 37 departments within our facility."

SMIH department managers submitted project requests and were required to show how the request would benefit patients or residents; projects funded included everything from ultrasound and radio equipment to resident recliners and recycling containers.

"The members of ROOTS are a dynamic group of employees," said Tom Thompson, CEO of St. Mary's Innovis Health. "Seventy-nine percent of our employees give philanthropically to our organization and that is something in which we are very proud."
