Thief climbs tower for copper wire
DULUTH, Minn. - About 900 feet of copper wire is missing from a 360-foot cell phone tower in Duluth, thanks to a gutsy thief.
Police say the suspect or suspects climbed the tower, which is as long as the entire length of a football field.
Duluth police investigator Trudie Thompson says she thinks the thief had some knowledge of the tower. The theft happened within the past two weeks and was reported Thursday.
Thompson says replacing the wire will cost about $6,000, mostly because of installation costs. The copper wire itself is probably worth about $400.
The tower wasn't the only target of copper thieves in the Duluth area. This month someone stole $48,000 worth of new copper pipe and fittings from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
