Three hurt in Highway 34 accident Saturday
PARK RAPIDS - Three people were injured Saturday west of Nevis in a three-vehicle accident on Highway 34.
The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. when a westbound Chevy Trailblazer was trying to avoid an eastbound vehicle traveling in the wrong lane and struck a Chrysler Concorde.
"It appears somebody fell asleep at the wheel," said Hubbard County Sheriff Frank Homer.
The driver of the third vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, 18-year-old Lars M. Olson of Sartell, was not injured. It was unclear from the information provided by the Minnesota State Patrol as to whether Olson was the driver who fell asleep.
The driver of the Trailblazer was identified as David Johnson, 51, of Plymouth. He was treated and released. His passengers, who were not injured, were identified as Stephen Johnson, 49, of Plymouth; Joel A. Johnson, 43, of Maple Grove and Lynette Johnson, 37, of Maple Grove.
The occupants of the Concorde are both listed in critical condition. It was unclear where they were airlifted by helicopters that responded to the crash scene.
The driver was 64-year-old Rodney L. Roberts, 64, of Coon Rapids. The passenger was listed as Judith N. Roberts, 63, also of Coon Rapids.
The accident remains under investigation by the State Patrol.
