Three Willmar juveniles apprehended for garage fires
WILLMAR -- Three juvenile males ages 14, 16 and 17 are in custody after they allegedly set two garages on fire after stealing items from them early Saturday morning.
Willmar Police officers caught the three suspects as they returned to retrieve stolen goods and as firefighters battled the two blazes they are believed to have set, according to information from the Willmar Police Department.
Police officers and fire fighters responded to a garage fire on the 600 block of Ninth Street Southwest around 2:27 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters found the garage fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to a nearby residence.
As they arrived, they spotted and received a report of another garage on fire on the 500 block of Southwest Ninth Street.
Officers learned there were several reports of burglaries from garages in the area of the fires. Some of the stolen property was located in the immediate area, the police reported.
Officers requested a tracking dog from the Pope County Sheriff's Department. While officers prepared to search the area with the dog, three juvenile male suspects were spotted returning to the scene apparently to collect some of the stolen property that had been left.
A foot pursuit ensued and in a short time all three suspects were located and taken into custody.
They remain in custody pending possible charges including felony arson, burglary and theft.
The Willmar Police Department was assisted by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Department.
