The Becker County Chapter of Thrivent Financial gave $1,000 to the Becker County Food Pantry located in Detroit Lakes. This is the gift part of $76,000 grant given by Thrivent Financial's regional financial offices in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin to thank its volunteers and to support Minnesota FoodShare.

Thrivent chapters (local members that gather for charitable, social and educational activities) received the funding based on the number of activities they sponsored that supported the community in 2009.

Additional funding ranged from $500 to $1,000 per qualifying chapter.

"We are proud of the charitable, social and educational activities performed by our members," said Joy Peterson, manager of services for Thrivent Financial's 116 chapters across Minnesota Division. "This funding recognizes the good work our members do every day to improve people's lives and do good in their communities."

The Becker County Thrivent Chapter was led by Carolyn Engebretson last year. She led a volunteer board of nine members who allocate Thrivent Thrivent Financial funding and volunteer activity in support of local needs.

The chapter is also advised by Thrivent Financial representatives, Chris Cymbaluk and Adam Evavold.

Pastor Randy Whitehead has been elected chair for 2010. Other officers are: Bob Jernberg, Donita Kimball, Arlin Huwe, Glenice Hall, Bob Kohler, Dorothy Harsh, Melanie Hanson, Judy Wallace, and Dick Groth.

The programs submitted for the grant were The Nature Extravanganza, Annual trip to the State Fair, Annual Meeting Dinner, Parents, Teens, and Money Workshop.

Minnesota FoodShare is a program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches. It is an interfaith collaboration that raises food and funds annually for 260 food shelves in the state of Minnesota and advocates for hungry Minnesotans year-round.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a fraternal benefit society (not-for-profit life insurer and membership organization) helping nearly 3 million members active their financial goals and give back to their communities.

Thrivent Financial and its affiliates offer a broad range of financial products and services. It also sponsors national outreach programs and activities that support congregations, schools, charitable organizations and individuals in need.
