Thursday Review: Energy drinks provide a pre-workout boost
I wish drinking Celsius made me look like Sofia Vergara.
A few cans of the gingery beverage and I'd magically transform into a leggy Colombian goddess.
The "Modern Family" super-babe was recently spotted sipping "the world's first and only negative-calorie drink," which promises to boost metabolism, reduce body fat, increase endurance and provide lasting energy.
The low-sodium Celsius contains no sugar, no high-fructose corn syrup, no aspartame, and no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors.
If you drink it before a workout (which I did - twice), you're supposed to burn up to 100 calories due to its "thermogenic effect," or the amount of energy required to digest, absorb, transport and store food.
Since I don't have a Bodybugg or other wearable calorie-tracking device, I don't know for sure whether Celsius gave me an additional calorie burn.
On night one, I drank the Sparkling Wild Berry (the best of the three flavors I tried) before doing an hourlong cardio workout.
On night two, I drank the Sparkling Orange before an hourlong half-cardio, half-strength-training workout.
I'd like to think the fizzy liquid gave me a boost because I felt good both nights even though I'd taken the previous week off from the gym.
Celsius, powered by "MetaPlus," a blend of supposed calorie-burning ingredients such as green tea, ginger and guarana, made me feel strong and energized.
... or was it because I was happy to be back in the gym? Or was it the placebo effect?
On Monday morning, I sipped a little of the non-carbonated Green Tea Raspberry Acai in place of my half-pot of Dark Roast, though Celsius contains 200 mg of caffeine, similar to drinking two 8-ounce cups of coffee.
(For best results, you're supposed to drink Celsius 15 minutes before moderate exercise, but I wanted to try three of the seven flavors available.)
The Green Tea Raspberry Acai was my least favorite. The can remained on my desk three-fourths full. These drinks definitely benefit from carbonation.
The 10-calorie drinks, which have been featured on NBC's "Today" show and Food Network's "Unwrapped," go down easier when they're ice cold and you drink them quickly.
Bottom line: I'd drink Celsius again (the Wild Berry flavor, anyway), even if it doesn't affect my calorie burn or make me look like Sofia Vergara.
