The time for religious extremism is gone
Just asking, but what happened to the John Birch Society? Just asking, but what happened to the Posse Comitatus? Just asking, but what happened to the Ku Klux Klan? Just asking, but what happened to the Family Research Council? I will suggest those four God driven groups have merged into one large hate group – The Tea Party!
I find it ironic the Don’t Tread On Me banner has become symbolic for them; the coiled snake warning of a sudden deadly strike. Is not the serpent Satan in the Garden of Eden? Is not the serpent the sign of evil?
It is known that over 50 recognized religions are within our borders. It is also estimated that over 5,000 cults also exist, constantly fluctuating in degree and number.
Years ago I was over-the-top with religious fervor. I was in a terrible mess and desperate for relief. Luckily I had friends with love and patience enough to get me straightened out.
It took several years and with my following of Jimmy Swaggart and Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, the ‘letting go’ became imperative. These ‘walk on water’ blatant hypocrites were nothing more than self-serving con artists.
It was and is still about the money for some. Jesus for profit and self-aggrandizement – religious and political celebrities with halos of dollar signs.
For many years now I have a God of my choice; an ‘easy does it but do it’ God. It is what it is and works beautifully!
The world has changed and will continue to do so – this is the very essence of creationism. The proper term is evolution – it is and always will be that way.
And so today we have a small, very loud ‘Tea Party’ willing to burn down the house of Democracy for a theocracy of greed, hate, ignorance and hypocrisy. Its self-proclaimed leaders are only provocateurs – children of a lesser God and quite petulant!
We are not a godless nation by any stretch, but I and many others are tired of the extremists, opportunists and provocateurs attempting to mandate a black and white (purist) philosophy. The social agenda has run its course. The Pope himself has said, “Who am I to judge?” It’s time to move on.
As I mentioned before, over 50 recognized religions and 5,000 cults. Kool-Aid anyone? As for the current Republican Party brand, the one that ‘wants its country back’ I highly recommend a biography of Theodore Roosevelt, “Theodore Rex” by Edmund Morris, Ronald Reagan’s authorized biographer. A Pulitzer Prize winner, his credentials are legitimate and impeccable.
The 21st century can be just as incredible and challenging if we remember that our pants go on the same way and that we’re in this together!
It just might be that Confucius, the ancient Chinese philosopher was correct when he said, “Respect God, but keep Him at a distance!” — Leland Jenson, Detroit Lakes
