Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge presents the movie "Planet Earth - Great Plains" at 2 p.m. today in the visitors' center. From the 2,000-mile migration undertaken by three million caribou in the Arctic tundra to a pride of 30 starving lions hunting elephants, Great Plains reveals the most impressive migrations and boldest hunts on the planet.

Detroit Lakes Library Club and Becker County Friends of the Library present nationally known writer and book reviewer Nancy Pearl, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Historic Holmes Theater. Nancy Pearl is a best-selling author, book reviewer and was the first Executive Director of the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library. Her prolific reading and her knowledge of books and literature have made her a "rock star among readers and the tastemaker people turn to when deciding what to read next." This program is free and open to everyone.

The Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes is proud to present its 2008-09 season. The 2008-09 Broadway in Fargo at the Gate City Bank Theatre-Fargodome season is almost here. "Chicago," presented Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. is the first show of the season as well as the last opportunity to subscribe! Offered this year is the Four-Show Premiere Subscription Series which includes "Chicago," "Hairspray," "Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles" and "Footloose." The Midwest's only "official" rock and roll beach party band, Bob & the Beachcombers will start off the 2008-09 Top Hat Theatre Performing Arts season on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Ulen-Hitterdal School, starting at 7:30 p.m. The season has increased to nine events, but the price has remained the same as last year. Season tickets are $48 per individual or $120 per family (two adults and two students). Be sure to buy your tickets before the first concert at Ulen-Hitterdal School, Northwestern Bank, or the Pump N' More. Tickets will be $15 at the door for adults and $10 for students, so buy season tickets and save big! If you don't have a series brochure, call the school at 218-596-8853 to have one mailed to you.

An exhibit of "Works in Various Media" by Detroit Lakes artist Linda Doebbert will be on display in the main meeting room through Sept. 30 at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, and examples of handmade book styles by Linda Doebbert will also be on exhibit in the library's upstairs reading room. The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center is now taking registrations for the 2008-09 DLCCC After School Program. The program allows students in grades K-6 to get a balance of the arts and physical activity. Activities will include arts-related workshops such as acting, dance, glass making, clowning and theatre tech, as well as gym and swim time and sports clinics. The program is available throughout the school year, Monday through Friday, 3:45 p.m.-5:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per day, per child with a two day per week commitment. On May 1, 1960, Captain Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting his U2 spy plane sparking one of the most famous international incidents of the Cold War. The latest exhibit at the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, "Top Secret," which opened May 1 and continues through Oct. 31, includes photographs and artifacts from the Cold War Museum about the U-2 Incident.
