Tow truck driver remains critical
A Detroit Lakes tow truck operator who was injured while helping set up a county disaster drill remains in the critical care unit at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Mike Smith's condition "is very serious," his family said on their CaringBridges.org Web site Thursday. "He is still under critical care in the ICU and not out of the proverbial woods yet.
"Mike has four different teams of doctors caring for him, each with a specialty.
"Mike remains sedated and on a ventilator, as Dr. Townsend put it today, 'Mike will remain on the ventilator, so his body can focus on healing ... not how to breathe.'
"Lung X-rays show improvement on the pneumonia. Mike had another surgery today ... with good news, the incision on Mike's stomach (from the drainage tube) was closed today -- which is another step forward. Mike had another good night last night and vitals continue to be stable."
He was injured Sept. 9 when he was pinned against a tree while helping set up a Becker County disaster drill.
