Train, semi collide near Perham
A semi-truck filled with fertilizer collided with a train and rolled over at the intersection of 425th Ave. and County Highway 80 near Perham early this morning.
The truck, operated by West Central Ag, pulled up to the intersection heading south. The driver didn’t see the westbound train in time, tried to accelerate over the tracks to avoid being hit, but was clipped in the back, according to Sgt. Keith Van Dyke of the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department.
There are no crossing arms at that intersection.
No injuries were reported.
“He’s very lucky. A second earlier and it would have been square on the driver’s door,” Van Dyke said.
A fuel line on the semi was damaged in the crash, causing a small amount of diesel fuel to leak, according to the sheriff’s office.
A citizen reported the accident to the Perham Police Department, which initially responded. The Minnesota State Patrol, Perham Fire Department and a team from BNSF Railway Company also responded, due to the nature of the diesel spill.
The leaking line was crimped and train service was restored within half an hour.
